Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to bring to a notarization?
You must bring a valid, government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport), and the unsigned document that needs to be notarized. All signers must be present.
What if my ID is expired?
In California, a notary public may accept an expired identification (ID) if it meets specific criteria outlined in the CA state law. The key condition is that the expired ID must have been issued within the past five years. Please contact us to see if your ID can be accepted.
Can you provide legal advice or draft documents?
No, notaries are not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice or draft legal documents unless also licensed to practice law.
Can you notarize documents in another language?
Yes, but all parties must understand the contents of the document. The notary must also be able to communicate directly with the signer in a common language.
Can I sign the document before the appointment?
No. Documents must be signed in front of the notary, unless it’s a copy certification or an acknowledgment, which has different rules.
Can you notarize for someone who is elderly or ill?
Yes, but the signer must be alert, coherent, and signing willingly. If we believe someone is being coerced or doesn’t understand the document, we cannot proceed.
Do you offer remote/online notarization (RON)?
No. California has officially legalized Remote Online Notarization (RON), through the passage of Senate Bill 696, signed into law by the Governor on September 30, 2023. The implementation of RON should be available on January 1, 2030.
